Leading world experts to re-envision Urban India
At The Urban Leaders Symposium organised by Cityscape India, December 9, 2009
— “Cityscape India” in association with “The Urban Vision” will co-host a groundbreaking symposium that will address critical ways for leaders in both public and private sectors to re-envision India’s cities. The Urban Leaders Symposium will be held at the Bombay Exhibition Centre on December 9, 2009 alongside the exhibition to be held between 9-12 December , 2009.
India’s 300 million city dwellers make up about one-tenth of the world’s urban population. Today, many Indian cities are growing so rapidly that even as the census gets completed it is already way out of date. The speed and nature of growth in cities in recent times and the magnitude of its environmental consequence is unprecedented by history. The Symposia will address ways to manage this extraordinary pace of urbanization.
Most leaders acknowledge that the future of India is largely rooted in the effectiveness of its cities. Already, cities are engines of economic growth. Today the contribution of urban areas to the Indian Government’s revenues is more than 90 per cent and cities make up almost 60 per cent of the GDP even though they represent only 30 % of the country’s total Population. Enhancing the productivity of India’s cities which can potentially push economic growth and reduce poverty is pivotal to the future of the nation.
Government, industry and social leaders will came together to analyze India’s imminent urban challenges as well as craft a vision framework for a sustainable and inclusive future in this meeting. Metro Councillor Robert Liberty from Portland USA , which is often quoted among the most progressive models of urban development in the world will speak on “Planning, Democracy and Sustainability”. Prof. Amita Bhide , from Centre for Urban Planning and Governance, Tata Institute of Social Sciences will highlight ideas of “Building Socially Equitable cities”. Ms. Patricia Annez , World Bank & Brookings Institute will speak about “Cities and Economic Development”. Mr. Pradeep Nair, Director of Clinton Climate initiative will address the theme “Urbanism in the age of Climate Change”.
The Symposia’s objectives is to build up cultural links and understanding between different geographies; learn from each others leadership, political sense, administrative skill; and to promote leaders to foster a common vision of environmental and social sustainability in the world.
